If a mother has Type 1 diabetes will her child also develop Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes?

by Diabetes Coach on February 4, 2010

My question is : Is Type 1 diabetes hereditary? Will it be passed on to future generations?

Some forms of type 1 diabetes are recessive genes, which means that the person needs two parents with the genes to have the disease, and even then, there’s a 25% chance they’ll be unaffected, and a 50% chance they’ll be an asymptomatic carrier. Other forms are dominant, so one parent can give it to their child. There’s no way to know which, if any, you’ve got because testing isn’t readily available unless you’re part of research.

"In general, if you are a man with type 1 diabetes, the odds of your child getting diabetes are 1 in 17. If you are a woman with type 1 diabetes and your child was born before you were 25, your child’s risk is 1 in 25; if your child was born after you turned 25, your child’s risk is 1 in 100."

So there you go, pretty good odds imo :) If the child remains active and a healthy weight into adulthood, its chances of getting type 2 are low.
