If it is treated properly and she takes care of herself, her life expectancy is just as good as a non-diabetic.
If the Insulin substitution is made perfectly, life expectancy is almost normal.
Yes, especially if she doesn’t treat it properly. Allowing the blood sugar to get too high causes damage in many of the body’s organs. This is why some diabetics have to have amputations, dialysis, and go blind. Those are the long term effects. In the short term, it’s possible to die of having a blood sugar that’s too high OR too low.
the bottom line is type 1 diabetes is complicated, and not "can cause" but "does cause" many complications and health risks. for example the risk of heart attack or stroke is 4x greater in diabetics.
She can do her best to minimize these risks greatly by taking care of herself.
